What is the Difference Between Content Writing and Copywriting?

Content writing mainly involves presenting valuable information that can be shared. Its main purpose is to solve readers’ queries.

But, copywriting is advertising style writing. Its main purpose is to achieve short-term goals to generate leads or sales.

Both involve writing content and are very closely related to each other, but, are not the same.

What Is Content Writing?

Content writing means creating content that solves a specific purpose. Its main purpose is to inform, educate, entertain, or persuade your readers. It involves proper planning, writing, editing, and publishing. For example blog posts, video scripts, webinars, podcasts, webpages, social media posts, etc.

Qualities of a Good Content Writer

A good content writer understands the pain points of the readers. He creates content providing solutions to the problems of its target audience and thereby developing long-term relations between the readers and the brand. Also, along with good writing skills, you must know content marketing strategies to promote your content.

Here are a few qualities you must possess to become a quality content writer:        

• Able to create long-form and engaging content
• Familiar with keyword research to increase search engine rankings
• Know how to outline and format content to make it easy for readers to read
• In-depth knowledge of grammar rules
• Ability to edit and proofread the content before publishing
• Good research skills to create valuable content
• Ability to write for various online platforms
• Ability to generate new content ideas regularly
• Ability to write keeping readers problems in mind
• Follow client’s guidelines and meet the deadline set by him
• Revising content till the client is satisfied with the content

Copywriting

Copywriting is done using persuasive, interactive, and forceful language.

It involves writing marketing materials, such as advertisements, emails, newsletters, sponsored ads, brochures, landing pages, etc.

Its main goal is to motivate readers to take an action. For example: downloading an ebook, buying a product, filling a form, making a phone call, etc.

Qualities of a Good Copywriter

A good copywriter understands the need of the target audience and creates a persuasive copy to motivate readers to take the desired action.

Here are a few qualities you must possess to become a quality copywriter:      

• Research about features and benefits of the product
• Research about the requirements of your target market
• Understand what brand wants to achieve through their marketing campaign
• Use appropriate language that develops brand confidence among readers
• Ability to explain complicated ideas in simple language
• Know how to write error-free, short-form, and highly persuasive copy
• Know how to use storytelling to connect with readers at the emotional level
• Basic understanding of search engine optimization (SEO)
• Ability to meet the client’s requirement and deadline
