Summary

This case is a sad commentary on the times we are living in. One whole year has passed and we are still clueless as to what happened to Sushant Singh Rajput on 14 June 2020.

The Backdrop

This is not the first case of its kind. Thousands or may be even lakhs of people are denied justice. Even in Bollywood innumerable cases have come to the fore that haven’t even been reported out of fear, in the past one year. What makes this case stand out of all is that he was the face of Bollywood, loved by one and all; so everything has become larger than life.

Exactly one year ago on this fateful day, I don’t remember exactly how, but we received the shocking news. They said it was a case of suicide. I knew him as a budding actor and had also watched his much-acclaimed film, M S Dhoni. This movie had made him a star overnight. I didn’t realise that he had also acted in PK that I had seen four years ago. I had also watched his movie, Kai Po Chhe, but didn’t know the actors. By 2019 he had become a household name. Somehow, I had missed watching his first claim to fame, i.e., his popular tele-serial, Pavitra Rishta.

But he became special to me when on the same day, my son, who was on the phone chatting with me, said that he was pretty disturbed at this news. You see, my son is someone who never gets disturbed so easily. Anyway, the constant barrage of news and videos on YouTube kept me hooked on my phone for months together. We hungered for more and YouTube ensured that we got even more.

Every new day brought loads and loads of videos, loaded with tit-bits, assumptions, interviews and what not. Some were fake and some were true. This, you see, continues even to this day.

But one thing was true, SSR’s name and fame had spread far and wide. This fateful incident only helped to make him even more famous. The only regret, he was not there to enjoy all this attention and love.

Sushant Singh Rajput

They say people talk sweetly about a person after he or she dies. So people started posting all good things about SSR also.

Many people noticed, of course with hindsight, his sweet smile, his disarming innocence, his benevolent acts, his total commitment to whatever he did, his hard work, his intelligence, and the list goes on and on. Yeah, there is virtually no end to it. Even foreigners reacted to his death. Paranormal specialists from India and abroad claimed to have connected with his soul a number of times. Evidence was collected and theories about the possible reasons of his death were put forward on YouTube.  In Bihar, his native place, a crossroad has been named after him. Even in Australia, a road has been named after him.

After NCB and ED, his case is being investigated by the CBI. However, no conclusions have been drawn.

After patiently waiting for one whole year, people are now demanding justice for SSR in stronger ways.

With the intention of getting to know him better, I watched his movies, Chhichhore, Kedarnath and Dil Bechara on TV. Zee TV started broadcasting his serial Pavitra Rishta which is still on air. Me and my family are watching that too. His acting is par excellence and reflects his true self. He was spontaneous, humble and sensitive. His intelligence, cheerfulness and his urge to live life to the fullest just oozes out of every pore on his skin.

He never displayed any starry airs, and was always ready to help others. He valued his fans and his interests matched his intellect.

The speech he delivered to IITians was nothing short of brilliant. The way he explained success and happiness was simply superb. The manner in which he expressed himself to deliver his message was marvellous. Those who have seen that video would definitely agree with me, for others, here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcz07ZnWIDM&list=TLPQMDIwNzIwMjHHlQ1gePZSYg&index=1

But then, did such a nice person deserve what he got? All his hard work, all his sincerity, all his intelligence and all his good deeds served no purpose at all. In the end, his life was cruelly snuffed out at such a young age. His talent, his goodness and his dreams were wasted after all. He could have given so much to this world, in terms of happiness and deeds. He could have enjoyed a fulfilling life. But that did not happen; it could not happen, and he left us leaving the world a much sadder place.

Epiphany

The untimely, shocking and inconsolable death of SSR has conveyed two strong messages to the world.

First, the timeless preaching — excess of everything is bad — always holds true. Only a misfortune of this huge dimension could throw light on the vices Bollywood is replete with, due to excess money.

Second, one should always be watchful of what is happening in personal life after he starts earning way ahead of his needs and plans. He should not only be cautious of his ambitions but also of his company. If he is not careful enough his end is not far off.
