A Step-by-Step Strategy for Beginners to Write Grammatically Correct Sentences

Summary: Are you beginning as a writer and want to write grammatically correct sentences? But you are facing difficulty in finding the exact strategy. so here is the step-by-step plan to write sentences without making mistakes.

Introduction

English is a wonderful language. With a huge set of words, language is truly an art. And even though the words are beautiful, they do not make sense when used independently. For example- “Children”.

The above word is not giving us any meaningful information. So, to communicate clearly, words are used in sentences. But to create sentences, there are some rules. These rules in the language are known as grammar. The sentences that follow these rules are called grammatically correct sentences.

Having said that, let us learn the basic grammar rules. By the end of this post, you will be able to create your first grammatically correct English sentence.

  1. Subject and Verb

All the sentences are made of two parts: subject and verb.

  • What is a subject: nouns or pronouns. For example- Dog, Hari, Them, I.
  • What is a verb: action words. For example- sing, play.

Let us say, we took “I” for the subject and “play” for the verb.

          Result: I play.

That’s a short and grammatically correct English sentence.

Now let us take “Dog” for the subject and “play” for the verb.

Result: Dog play.

The above sentence is a grammatically wrong sentence. Why? Let us understand the subject-verb agreement next.

  1. Subject-verb Agreement

Before we refine the grammatically wrong sentence in the previous example, keep in mind the two rules :

  • Singular subjects have singular verbs
  • Plural subjects have plural verbs

To get a clear picture of the rule, read the below example:

Play- plural verb

Plays- singular verb

Based on the logic, the correct sentence from the first point will be : Dogs play.

But what if we wanted to use a singular subject for the same sentence?

The correct sentence would be: A dog plays.

Please note: “A” is used with singular nouns ONLY(not with pronouns).

For example- A cow walks.

                     A boy sleeps.

Now, we had another example in the first point- I sing.

But pay attention. Isn’t “I” a singular subject and sing a plural verb?

With this observation, we have a new rule.

With the singular pronouns “I” and “You”, the “verb” is always “plural”.

Example-

  • I sing.
  • You play.

2. Tenses

Till now the examples we have seen belong to the present tense. But it is not always possible to form sentences with one tense. So, let us learn some words that will help you to write sentences in past and future tenses too.

  • Is
  • Used in describing facts
  • Used with present continuous tense(things that are happening right NOW)
  • Used with singular subjects
  • Examples for facts: 1. The sky is blue. 2. Cheating is bad.
  • Examples for present continuous tense: 1. Meera is singing A dog is playing.
  • Are
  • Used in describing facts
  • Used with present continuous tense(things that are happening right NOW)
  • Used with plural subjects
  • Examples for facts: 1. Sunflowers are yellow Injections are painful
  • Examples for present continuous tense: 1. Students are jumping A dog is playing. 3.You are a good girl.

Please note: I are a student (WRONG)

                      I am a student(CORRECT)

  • Was
  • Used with past tense
  • Used with past continuous tense(think that you have traveled to the past and watching those activities LIVE)
  • Used with singular subjects
  • Examples: 1. Ashoka was a king. Ritu was crying. 3. Rajan was cooking.

  • Were
  • Used with past tense
  • Used with past continuous tense(think that you have traveled to the past and watching those activities LIVE)
  • Used with plural subjects
  • Examples: 1. The students were dancing. 2. The soldiers were fighting. 3.You were running.

Please note: Past tense sentences can be created without “was” and “were”. You need to know the past tense of the verb. Examples:

                         1.A lion roared.(verb-roar)

  1. You laughed.(verb- laugh)

  • Will
  • Used with future tense
  • Used with both singular and plural subjects
  • Examples: 1. The kids will eat. 2. Seema will study You will pay.

EXERCISE TIME!

  1. Choose your favorite subject (You, your friend, your family member).
  2. Choose a verb(talk, pray, jump, shout)
  3. Choose a tense(past, present, future, present continuous, past continuous)
  4. Combine the above three and create a sentence.

Conclusion
