Article Title: Why Schizophrenia is Termed as a Social Stigma: Read the Real Story

Summary: Do you have someone in or around your social circle suffering from schizophrenia? If it is then it might be possible that you have been through the social consequences of this. Yes, the darkest side of schizophrenia is social stigma. Let us get inside the real picture.

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder affecting approximately 20 million people worldwide. According to “Epidemiologic Reviews, 2008”, the annual number of new cases of schizophrenia is 1.5 per 10,000 people. It is a serious mental disorder that affects a person’s ability to think, manage emotions, and make decisions. It is a complex, long-term medical illness. It may lead to a combination of symptoms, such as hallucinations, delusions, mood swings, disordered thinking, and behavior. Generally, in public opinion, schizophrenia has more negative implications than any other public health issue in the world.

What is Social Stigma?

In layman’s terms, social stigma refers to discrimination against a particular group of people in the form of a negative attitude. People express concern and show sympathy when they visit a doctor for treatment of physical ailments. The scenario isn’t the same for mental health as people usually take it in the wrong way. They start thinking that the patient has lost his mind and must be admitted to a mental asylum. There is a need to spread awareness regarding mental health disorders to eliminate this stigma.

How it is Associated with Schizophrenia?

The main challenge for people suffering from schizophrenia is their acceptance in the community. Despite modern advanced treatments, this stigma limits access to treatment and hampers their full integration into society. However,  schizophrenic patients are not the only ones who are stigmatized. This social stigma is also imposed upon relatives, close friends, and all those who come into close contact with the mentally ill, including mental health professionals.

Following are some factors associated with schizophrenia: –

  • Limited Knowledge: A lot of the things are still unknown regarding the disorder.
  • Lack of Awareness: People are often afraid of unknown things.
  • Misconception: There is confusion, anxiety, and fear among the public leading to negative attitudes.

Consequences of Social Stigma

The society:

  • Avoids and rejects such individuals.
  • Creates an environment to hide the disorder due to feelings of shame.
  • Discourages individuals from adopting a healthy life.
  • Demotivates the frontline personnel to take responsibility.
  • Creates hurdles in obtaining quality education or gainful employment.
  • Verbally abuses the person and their family members.
  • Resorts to physical violence and this hampers further treatment.

How to Mitigate and Address the Stigma Associated with Schizophrenia?

It is very essential to eliminate the stigma associated with schizophrenia so that these individuals can live a normal life.

We can reduce this by following the below simple steps:

Practice Acceptance and Respect.

Individuals having schizophrenia must be accepted by the community. Give respect to them and bring them into the social mainstream by organizing get-together activities. These people should be hired in employment based on their talents irrespective of their schizophrenic background.

Spread Awareness

Medical professionals, social activists should come forward to educate the common people and awareness campaigns should be run to reduce the fear and social stigma associated with schizophrenics.

Show Compassion Toward Schizophrenics

The simple act of showing affection and compassion to such individuals can make a huge difference and literally will make them feel good.

Share Positive Stories

Many individuals have recovered from this disorder and are living their life happily. We can share and spread such stories in society through different media, such as television, newspaper, and social media. This will create positive vibes and hope for all who are suffering from this disorder.

Conclusion: In essence, negative prejudice, misconceptions, fear are the reasons which lead to creating social stigma. The focus is needed to address and mitigate this stigma for the empowerment of individuals suffering from the disorder. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective way of treating schizophrenic patients. If you are sensitized by reading this article then come forward and share your own story of tackling the social stigma of schizophrenia. We would love to read them and exchange our thoughts and opinions to reach a solution to this stigma.

These days using the essence and essential oils in cooking/baking gives more burst in flavours, giving it a nice savour. Baking stimulates the senses of our body making it active by the feel of the flour and sugar, the delish taste of the final product, hearing the voices of beating and blending and seeing ribbons of the batter giving it a therapeutic effect.
