Elderly: when elders start behaving like a child

Do you have an elderly at home who behaves like a child every so often? With this kind of behaviour, you get exasperated. Why? The human mind is mysterious! Because you haven’t seen them like this before as an adult. They are behaving like a child at this point of age is because they overwhelmingly recall their time when they were loved and cared for.

Ageing is a natural process. The human life cycle begins and comes to an end. With time everything changes. So does human! As you age, there is a progressive loss of tissue and organ functions. And when they behave like a child, this is because they want to seek attention and inside, they feel unaccompanied and deserted.

In this competition of life, where parents are busy doing their work. Kids also love interacting and playing with grandparents. Elderly people love doing the same, hanging out with kids which brings back their childhood memories of living a carefree life with no burden and responsibilities. This is the only reason as they cling to the kids.

Moreover, Elderly people are wise, filled with experience and full of knowledge. They can give you the best advice and solutions to your problems. They have seen and felt life with their very eyes, and they haven’t got white hair “just like that”. Sometimes people at the age of 85 look like 55, and some are facing severe health issues and they look of their age. It depends upon the way they have lived their life or the way they got to live.

When they can become childlike, then why can’t you be the same for a while to show your love towards them. The Elderly is the most precious gift you will ever have, respect them for what they are. They have given birth to you and raised you to be good in life. They provided you with all the basic and other amenities of life so that you can live in this world without having any complexity or insecurity. The Elderly are selfless, they ask for your time and support in these years of their age.

When they start cribbing or act like a stubborn child, you can alter your thinking or say yes to whatever they say. You may keep your point of view in a very polite manner, arguing with elderly people is not a good trait. Otherwise hurting them in this manner will put you in guilt and regrets. They have lived their quality life spending time with you, showing up for your achievements in life. Exploring the world with kids is different as an adult, but when ageing starts elderly people like being comfortable at home, and want everything to be in reach of them.

Once in a while, imagine yourself in that position when you will grow old, and think why they behave like a child. Sometimes our careless environment at home makes them irritated as old people like everything to be neat and clean, and things should be kept in the proper place. But if something gets misplaced by anyone or they get hurt by anything that can make them yell and crib just like a child.

When ageing starts elderly may face many problems and due to that they may not be able to do their routine work or activities they like. They cannot endure such type of situations. Facing all this, which may give them a terrible feeling of being dependent on others.

We are their companions to hold their hands when they need it and give them assurance and strength to stand back again. The inner child that lives in them needs confidence that they are doing good in their lives, they still have a reputation in society. We should feel very proud to have them in our lives.

There are several ways to show your love towards them: –

  • Spend time and listen to them patiently, many elderly feel lonely. They need the company to share their feelings and opinions. They want somebody to sit with them and chat the whole day. Everyone should take out time for them in the morning or at night. Pay them due respect for what they are and for what they have done for you.
  • Be polite, when we are polite to them it comes under showing manners and etiquette politeness is an example of respect.
  • Ask for advice, the elderly contribute to society with their knowledge and wisdom. They have a lifetime of experience that cannot be overlooked.
  • Eat together, eating together with the family is a very good custom. While you catch up at the dining table for food and gossip with everyone is time well spent and a lot of sentiment attached when we share thoughts and food.
  • Most important, discuss family heritage, history and traditions. Not only listening to the family stories bring family members together and strengthen the tie between generations.

To conclude, being a responsible citizen and dutiful children taking care of the elderly is not an obligation, it is your moral duty to take care of them and not neglect them. They guide us in every phase of our life so their presence is equally important for the family to grow. If you feel the same that the elderly become the child so often, what tips would you suggest to handle them in a very gracious manner?
