Why Writers Should Be Great Marketers?

Writing is a noble occupation, but in today’s world, writers should also be good marketers. Writing is one thing but marketing your writing is a totally different game. If your purpose is earning money through your writing then you need to learn marketing. In fact, if a writer is really good at the craft and not so good in marketing all their efforts will go in vain as they will bring just pennies on the table for their family but if a writer has learned the power of influencing buyer’s decisions through their writing then they can bring a lot of money every day from the same efforts. A good writer is an influencer and can change people’s opinions with his writing. The opinion may be related to a thought, an ideology or money. This is the reason why copywriters are in such high demand. They get paid three times more than an average writer. They write such powerful copies that people reading them take action. They are hired by popular brands. If a copywriter is also a niche dominator and social media influencer they get paid what they ask for. Simple!

The goal of writing is to inspire and add value to people. Marketing is helping people take decision. Marketing is also important to a writer because of the following reasons:

  1. Without marketing, nobody will know about your writing.
  2. Without marketing, you will be unable to brand yourself.
  3. You would not be making any money without marketing.
  4. The writing industry is becoming competitive so in order to survive writers need to learn marketing skills.
  5. It is not a matter of luck or chance. You must have a solid marketing strategy in place.

Traditional publishing is a very costly and extremely long-drawn process. So self-publishing is the best way to market your writing. In other words, if you do not learn marketing, you would not be able to get exposure and you would not make money.

If you call yourself a writer, it is obvious that you want to do it full time. If you want to do it full time, you have to earn money from your writing.

This cannot be done if nobody knows about you and if nobody pays you.

How to market your writing?

There are basically two ways to market your writing:

  1. Paid advertisements
  2. Organic marketing

Let us have a look at paid advertisements first. Almost all social media platforms have paid advertisements. Some of these are:

  • LinkedIn for Business
  • Facebook Business
  • Instagram
  • Google Adwords
  • YouTube Ads
  • Tik Tok
  • Snapchat
  • Quora

You will have to pay for these social media platforms and they will boost your posts or ads to the relevant audience. Each of these platforms has its own rules and policies for advertisers. If you do not follow them, your advertisement will stop running. In the worst-case scenario, they may ban your account altogether. Paid ads do work but you have to pay for them. Then you have to abide by their rules strictly. Even after all this, the results are not guaranteed. So you have to take the risk and test and tweak all the time. There are advantages as well as disadvantages of using paid advertisements.

Now let us flip through free or organic advertisements.

This can be done in the following ways:

Social media

In this method, you can post parts of your articles in social media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. You can join some writers’ groups on Facebook and provide value there. Whenever you publish an article, put a link in those groups.

Provide free value in questions and answers forums

There are forums such as Quora, Reddit and others with millions of followers. Post your writing links there in the appropriate groups. Do this after adding value to them. Your posts should not be spammy and let them look natural. You can get a lot of traffic from these forums.

Write guest posts

Writing guest posts is another way to market your writings and get traction. Guest posting gets your name and work out there. There are many websites that are looking for guest posts and you can write for them.

Give something free

Add value to your audience by giving something free. It could be a checklist, an E-book, some free advice, a consulting session, free training, etc. People love free things. It will bring more people to you to build your brand. The lesson here is that you have to sell yourself first before people will buy anything from you. You have to establish your credibility, trust and integrity. Once people trust you, they will wait to read your articles if they know how much value you can add to their lives.

Submit your articles to website submission sites

There are several article submission websites out there. You can submit your article there to get more traffic. Usually, these sites are free to use after registration.

Develop an online presence

It is very important through all these activities, to establish your online presence. People need to know you better. They need to see your work and see your face on the internet. Once people know enough about you to trust you, they will become your regular readers. They will want to know more about you.

Build your brand simultaneously with marketing

This process of exposing your writing and branding yourself online must go hand in hand. This whole process will take some time but you have to start from somewhere. Writing SEO-optimized content will help search engines to rank your articles. We would also like to mention here that when it comes to content marketing, do not ignore writing good, SEO-optimized content. SEO means Search Engine Optimization. There are three types of SEOs basically.

Technical  SEO

This has to do with the aesthetics of the website, SCHEMA Markup, SILO structure, site speed and Rich Snippets. You do not have to concern yourself with this when you are just beginning to write. It is a bit advanced.

On-Page SEO

This is related to using keywords in the title, description and in the article using low competition and highly searched keywords. Using long-tailed keywords is also a part of this. In other words, the search engines will promote your articles. This will bring more traffic to your articles.

Off-Page SEO

This is related to creating as many good backlinks as possible, social media and local SEO. These are some ways to promote your writing.

There is a difference between a blogger and a content writer. Content writers write for clients and get paid just one time whereas bloggers write for the online audience and get paid again and again.
