The Story of a Dangerous Tabletop Runway And an Unlucky Plane

Well, most of the readers might have traveled at least once in an airplane. In any flight, the most crucial stages of the flight are considered take-off and landing.

Take off is important as it is the process in which an aircraft is airlifted, that is, it accelerates to a certain speed and then the whole airplane just lifts off into the air. Landing is even more so because here a pilot has to carefully decrease the speed of the plane, navigate it through the city to the airport and then carefully land on the runway.

If you are traveling in a car at a speed of 200kilometres and you have to stop the car immediately, then you would apply the brakes of your car at full pressure. The car would require a certain distance to come to a full stop.

There are two factors in braking.

  • The weight of the car or object
  • The other is the speed from which it is brought to a complete rest.

It would not take a lot of effort to stop a cycle at a speed of 20 kilometers an hour. This is because the weight of the cycle is very less and the speed from which it is being brought to rest is also just 20 kilometers an hour.

This can be simply formulated as – the more the speed and weight, the longer the braking distance.

Now take the case of a commercial plane. A commercial airplane weighs about 80000kgs or 80 tonnes and the speed at which it generally lands is about 240kilometres an hour to 260 kilometers an hour.

So, here the weight is too much and the speed is also very high, so it is easy for us to calculate that it takes a lengthy road or runway (as per aviation language) to land and bring the aircraft to a complete rest.

Understanding Runways

Usually, runways are pretty lengthy and are approximately 2 kilometers long. These runways are more than sufficient for big and wide-body commercial planes to land. These runways are generally located on plain lands.

However, there are certain places which are completely surrounded by mountains and it is very difficult to look out for a plain land. So, in these cases, the runways are built on top of the mountain itself.

Obviously, we can’t look out for a 2-kilometer long runway on top of a mountain. These types of runways are much smaller and are far dangerous than the typical runways. These runways generally have a cliff or a gorge at one end.

In fact, we can say that these runways are more disaster or accident-prone. These runways require experienced pilots to do justice.

The most dangerous tabletop runway in the world is located in Courchevel Airport (CVF), France.

This airport has a runway that is just 550 meters long. However, only small airplanes are certified to land here.

In India, there are a few airports that have tabletop runways. Here is a deadly episode that could have been avoided altogether.

Mangalore Air Disaster

This is one of the deadliest airports in India. This is considered one of the deadliest airplanes crashes in India. This accident happened on 22 May 2010.

It was 22 May 2010, the weather was clear in Dubai. Air India flight number 812 was heavy with fuel, passengers and was fully prepared for its journey to Mangalore in India.

There were 166 people inside the plane including the crew. There were 23 children and 6 crew members in this airplane. This plane took off from Dubai and crossed the Arabian Sea and then got into the Indian Territory near Mangalore. It had to cross the Western Ghats before landing in Mangalore.

Air India 812 was preparing for a landing. Little did the children know that their life was shortly about to end. Since this runway is located on a hilltop, only experienced pilots can land here.

The pilots in this flight were experienced and they had landed here many times earlier. Zlatko Glucika, a Serbian national was captaining this flight and Harvinder Singh Ahluwalia was the first officer. The time was 5:27in the morning, the weather was very clear and ATC (Air Traffic Controller) had cleared the plane to land on runway 24.

Air India flight 812 had not maintained its glideslope. Glideslope is the proper path of descent for an aircraft preparing to land. If the aircraft follows this glideslope then it would be able to land at the starting of the runway carefully and safely.

But in this case, the plane was not following the glideslope properly. It was too high. Usually, when planes are not following the glideslope, they go around; that is, they do not land and instead, they fly near the airport in a circular manner, decrease the altitude of the plane and then follow the glideslope properly and land.

But in this case, the pilot was lost in his dreams, he was sleeping!!!!!! First officer Ahluwalia tried to wake the captain but he was still groggy. When Ahluwalia told him that “Sir, we are going on a go-around”, captain Glucika woke up and refused the go-around.

Ahluwalia said, “It is necessary Sir, we are too high, we have to go on a go-around”. Captain Glucika ignored him and started diving at a very high speed. They had already crossed half the runway and they had not yet landed.

Air India 812 landed at almost the end of the runway. Everyone in the cockpit and the crew were panicking. Here, Captain Glucika took another wrong decision; he understood that the plane would not stop in the remaining portion of the runway. So, he pushed the throttle to full, and then he tried to take off the plane. But the runway remaining was not enough for the plane to take off.

Air India 812 at great speed fell out of the runway into the gorge. Since the plane’s engines were running, a huge fire occurred. Out of the 166 passengers aboard, only 8 survived.
158 passengers were killed immediately. Some were totally burnt in the fire and killed.

The pilot was definitely responsible but the Airline was not without its fault. Generally, airline companies force their pilots to give the passengers a smooth landing. If the pilot lands at the start of the runway, it would turn out to be a hard landing.

The landing was smooth; the pilot will not lose his job. But sadly the pilot and the passengers perished in this attempt.

A sad day indeed for Indian aviation.

All You Need to Know About Submarines

Submarines are fascinating vehicles. Secretive. Powerful. Even Deadly.

Submarines are lethal, silent, stealthy and a deadly platform for launching missiles, destroying enemy ships, ports, and other properties in seconds.

There are two types of submarines on the basis of how they are powered.

  • The first or the older one is the diesel submarines
  • The more modern type is the nuclear submarine.

Diesel Submarine

Diesel submarines don’t directly power the propeller of a submarine. Instead, they power electric generators, which in turn charges huge batteries located inside the submarine and the submarine propels ahead.

However, nowadays diesel submarines are being slowly replaced by nuclear submarines. These submarines can remain submerged inside water for only a few days, they have a very low speed and they can remain at their top speed for only a few hours.

Nuclear Submarines

Nuclear submarines are powered by nuclear reactors. Nuclear submarines are far quieter than diesel submarines. These submarines are capable of operating at high speeds for long periods of time. They have an unlimited range. They never have to be refueled for a period of 25 years. 25 years. Yes, you heard me right.

The different type of submarines on the basis of their functions:

In this category, there are mainly three types of submarines. Ballistic submarines, attack submarines, and cruise missile submarines.

Ballistic Submarines

These submarines are very deadly because they are capable of launching ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads.

Attack Submarines

As the name suggests, these submarines are for the purpose of attacking. These submarines are made for attacking and sinking enemy ships and submarines. These submarines are also called hunter-killer submarines. Some attack submarines are also capable of launching cruise missiles and vertical launch tubes.

Cruise Missile Submarines

As the name suggests, these submarines are specialized or customized for launching cruise missiles. These submarines use cruise missiles as their primary weapon for offense or defense.

How does a submarine work???

How does the submarine sink???

The answer is quite simple. Submarines have ballistic tanks and when they have to dive, the ballistic tanks are filled with water. Now on filling water, the weight of the submarine increases considerably and the submarine dives deep inside the water.

When the submarine has to come back again from the deep sea, the water in the ballistic tank is released, the submarine becomes much lighter and resurfaces.

We all know that when the submarine is deep inside the sea, there is hardly any oxygen available and without oxygen humans inside the submarine can’t survive. So an air compressor is fitted in the submarine and as long as the compressor works, there is life inside.

Submarines also have advanced periscope fitted in them,

Basically, a periscope has two mirrors, and the light passes through these mirrors. One can know what is happening outside on the surface of the submarine by just looking at the periscope.

A submarine costs around 3 billion and it has several compartments. Each compartment has a different function. There are mainly 5 compartments in a submarine.

Ship and weapon control systems

All communication from the naval headquarters and the submarine are carried in this place. All the monitoring panels, weapon control systems and diving and surfacing systems, steering system are placed here. This place is like the brain of the submarine.

Accommodation and life support

This is the place where submariners reside that is the cool and cold rooms are located here. Toilets, bunkers, galleys are present here.

Battery

Submarines have a type of battery called lead-acid batteries. These kinds of batteries are heavy. These batteries were replaced in the 1990s with a better technology that is nickel-metal hydride batteries. Now some submarines also run on lithium-ion batteries.

Machine and auxiliary machines

These account for 1/3rd of the weight of the submarine. There is a watertight bulkhead that divides these two compartments.

Propulsion compartment

The main electric propulsion motor is housed in this part of the submarine. The propulsion shaft and some associated systems are located here.

So, let’s wrap up by taking a look at the top 3 deadliest submarines in the world

     1.Seawolf Class (USA)

These are the most advanced and the most expensive submarines in the world. These are basically hunter-killer or attack submarines used by the United States Navy.

     2. Virginia Class (USA)

These are nuclear-powered attack submarines and are smaller and less inexpensive than the Seawolf class of submarines. These submarines are also operated by the United States Navy.

     3. Astute-class (UK)

These submarines were commissioned in the Royal Navy in 2010. These submarines are used to launch spearfish torpedoes and these submarines also belong to the attack group of submarines. These types of submarines can carry a total of 36 missiles and torpedoes.

So, the next time you see a submarine, you see it with fresh eyes. And marvel at the sophisticated technology at work.

How Does an Aircraft Carrier Work??

Aircraft carriers are like floating cities. They can make all the difference between victory and defeat.

In this article, let’s look into the capabilities, strategies, cost, and some facts of the aircraft carriers.

As the name suggests, aircraft carriers are large ships or carriers which have the capability to carry aircraft and can launch aircraft from their large deck.

It is like a floating airbase, however, there are different types of aircraft carriers.

How does an aircraft carrier launch and land fighter aircrafts?

Well, we know that an aircraft requires a large runway to take off from land but how do they do that from an aircraft carrier. The length of an average runway lies between 6000 ft and above but the length of the runway of some biggest aircraft carriers in the world lie between 1000 feet.

There are two types of launching an aircraft from the carrier. CATOBAR AND STOBAR.

CATOBAR

CATOBAR means Catapult Assisted Take-Off Barrier Assisted Recovery. This is the more advanced version compared to STOBAR. In this type of take-off, the aircraft requires a smaller runway so as to STOBAR and it can also launch AWACS (Airborne early warning and control system) aircraft that are a bit heavier than the fighter aircraft.

When we throw a stone from hand it goes a certain distance but if we throw or launch the same stone with the help of a catapult it is clearly seen that the stone travels more distance than the one thrown with a hand.

This is the concept applied in this type of aircraft launching system.

This technique can be seen in the Nimitz class carriers of the United States Navy.

STOBAR

STOBAR means Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery. In this type of launching system, there is no use of the catapult concept but here there is a ski jump platform from where the aircraft completes its launch.

This is however a simpler system compared to the CATOBAR and here the aircraft has to take off on its own power. This is used in INS VIKRAMADITYA (INDIAN NAVY) and of course by many other countries.

However, we have just seen about the launching systems.

How do the aircraft land in an aircraft carrier?

Landing is as important as taking off and as I mentioned these carriers don’t have a long runway so they use a system called arrested recovery.

In this system, there are some arrester wires and when landing, the aircraft has a hook which in the landing gets hold of these wires, and the aircraft stops immediately.

There are some carriers that have the capability of launching an aircraft every thirty seconds. This is an insane rate of launching aircraft.

Aircraft carriers have a limited number of missiles such as surface-to-air missiles and machine guns but their strength is the aircraft it carries with it.

Aircraft carriers never travel alone when deployed as they are very expensive and are big assets for the nation. They travel in groups. It is like a complete package. They have a supply ship, a guided-missile cruiser, an attack submarine, and also some guided-missile destroyer. This way it becomes nearly impossible to sink an aircraft carrier.

Aircraft carriers need not be refueled every now. There are some aircraft carriers in the world that are nuclear-powered. This means that they can travel unlimited distances for a period of 25 years without refueling.

However, this doesn’t mean that they can travel endlessly for years or decades. The reason is food and aircraft fuel. They need to restock for which they have to visit some port and this becomes inefficient.

So what do they do? They restock at sea with the help of supply ships. The supply ships will sail to nearby ports and then collect supplies and return with the fleet including the aircraft carrier.

Then the supply ship will sail alongside the aircraft carrier and then they attach ropes joining the two aircraft. Then the supplies are transported to the aircraft carriers with the help of ropes.

There is also another method in which these supplies are transformed. Here, the supplies are transferred with the help of a helicopter. This method is considered quite dangerous but is a lot easier compared to the other method.

Now for some information about AWACS helicopters used in aircraft carriers.

AWACS means Airborne Early Warning and Control System and as the name suggests it means that it is a kind of radar system fitted in an aircraft or a helicopter.

Now, there are also threats of submarine attacks. Submarines are silent, swift, and deadly at the same time. So, we use special helicopters that have sensors and sophisticated combat systems. These helicopters can track and hunt down enemy boats

So, the aircraft carrier can be called a traveling island. These aircraft carriers can make a huge difference in war and immensely contribute to the victory of a country.

What a lot of sophisticated technology goes into all of these carriers. Remarkable, isn’t it?

3 Main Features and benefits of Blockchain In Fintech Company

Summary: Does blockchain fascinates you? What is the role of blockchain technology in fintech? If yes, here are the salient features and benefits of blockchain technology that disrupts the fintech industry.

Introduction: Fintech is a much-hyped term in the financial service industry, and everyone from infant startups to corporate companies wants to get involved in it. We can describe fintech as a technology or a program supporting or enabling banking or financial services. This technology can shake the traditional financial markets and can become a game-changer. Blockchain plays a crucial role in fintech, but these terms are not the same in a precise manner. Let us discuss this in more detail.

After the evolution of the Internet, the term fintech stands for technology that is interfering with traditional financial services, including money transfers, loans, fundraising, mobile payments, and asset management. Every time we do online financial transactions or use tools for managing our investments or expenses, we use financial technology or fintech.

Fintechs are the established and startup businesses that aim to improve and modify financial services. On the other hand, a blockchain is a reorganized and distributed ledger for maintaining a permanent and immutable record of transactional data chronologically. This digital ledger stores transactional data on a real-time basis, which is a list of documents called blocks. Blockchain technology uses cryptography to link and secure these blocks.

Let us discuss the benefits of blockchain adoption:
Every blockchain comprises a “hash.” of the previous block when a new block is connected. The local copy of the database gets updated while validating the block. Hence, no one can take out the block in a blockchain without destroying it completely. This structure ensures an unchangeable digital report of actions. The most notable gain of blockchain technology is the incredibly high level of security. Apart from the security, other advantages of the blockchain are
User empowerment
Elimination of requirement of higher authority
Speedy transactions
Operational cost reduction
Transaction transparency.
Blockchain is regarded as the backbone technology in the revolution of the fintech industry. The financial experts or institutions must understand the role of the blockchain in fintech to take advantage of the revolution in the finance industry.
Trust is the biggest challenge in front of the fintech industry. Blockchain adoption is the most economical option for any fintech company to gain trust as it permits the organization to maintain track of all financial transactions in a lifecycle. Blockchain technology has given a chance to create safe, secured, and innovative financial products in the financial sector.
The main features of blockchain can be classified as follows:
Decentralization: It is a decentralized network that operates on a peer-to-peer basis. It eliminates the risks associated with the data stored at the centralized location as it saves data across its network.
Distributed Ledger: It allows sharing a ledger activity such as arbitrary data or virtually anything of value between multiple parties. To ensure transparency and avoid single-point failure, every computer in the distributed network maintains a copy of the ledger. All the prints are updated and validated simultaneously.
Immutable record: Blockchains resist the modification of data by design itself. Particular protocols have been observed to validate the new blocks. The consensus of the network majority is necessary for the conversion of the data recorded in the block.

Now, why is blockchain a powerful tool? The key to this question lies in two main features explained above: namely, decentralization and distribution.
Before adopting fintech in the financial service markets, the trusted third parties were involved in all transactions. The transactional data were stored at a centralized location with the help of these third parties. In those days, the threat of corruption by third parties was in existence. Blockchain removes the role of middleman, minimizing the risk associated with corruption and giving the ownership of the assets to the transacting parties.

The distributed infrastructure enables the blockchain to share the information in a secured format called ‘unalterable data transfer.’ This feature of the blockchain strengthens the trust of the business and consumers as many functions of the centralized third parties are taken over in a secured manner. This feature is relevant to the financial service industry as it relies on the trust of third parties involved in the transaction.

If you are a company owner or a part of senior management, you should plan to adopt blockchain technology for your business model.

For example, E-commerce giant Amazon has implemented blockchain technology to ensure fast and reliable syncs, secured networking, encryption at the transport and rest, durable storage of ledger data, etc., to the customers.

It will take some more years for blockchain technology to become a part of the mainstream financial model. As this technology is emerging, it is in a growing phase and has some challenges. It is crucial to keep updated with the recent development and transform our financial processes in our day-to-day life. If you are a business owner or personnel from the senior management of a company, please share your pain area of converting into blockchain technology in the comments. We will provide the best solution.
